The Spectrum (2.21.05)
Flood fund-raising nears $2 million mark
By BRIAN PASSEY

ST. GEORGE - The fund for flood victims is nearing the $2 million mark and the money is starting to filter out.

Dave Watson, president of the Virgin River/Santa Clara River Flood Relief, said the fund is up to $1,915,000 and $115,000 in disbursement checks are already signed.
"Checks are starting to go out to the victims," he said.
A fourth lot also was donated to the fund for one of the victims to rebuild.

Among recent large donations was $101,000 from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Foundation, said Dan Matheson, who coordinates public relations for the flood relief. The money was pledged by LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley in February when he spoke in St. George to LDS members affected by the flood.

HURRICANE - There's no name or master plan yet, and there was certainly no fanfare as two brothers quietly came into town Monday and bought about 2,200 acres that has been for sale for years.

Roland N. (Rollie) Walker, CEO of McNeil Development, and his brother, Lorin V. Walker, president of the company, purchased the Hurricane property known as Outlaw Ridge from Winding River.

The land, with two miles of commercial frontage along state Route 9, had been dubbed Outlaw Ridge since 2001 by developer Hank Isaksen, who announced that he would develop the property under that name.

McNeil Development, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, purchased the property after first viewing the parcel six weeks ago, which was the first time Roland Walker visited the St. George area.

"This is a beautiful piece of property and has a natural separation from the commercial area and residential area," Walker said Tuesday. "We have discovered the virtues and the treasures of this property."  ...READ ENTIRE STORY

This season, a scenario like no other over the past decade is taking place in local prep softball; one that has 6-0 Canyon View perched atop a competitive Region 9 that Snow Canyon has ruled since the school's inception in 1994-95.

With senior chucker Nikki Norton, the 4-2 Warriors' tradition of great pitching remains intact. However, this season three other region pitchers -Canyon View's Paige Affleck, Cedar's Whitney Larson and Pine View's Shaylee Holyoak - have each added their own unique flavor of pitching dominance.

Whether it's been Holyoak against Affleck, Larson and Norton or Larson vs. Holyoak, Norton or Affleck, and so on, the result of so many stellar pitching performances in the same games have created intensely competitive and highly entertaining softball throughout Region 9.....ENTIRE STORY.....

A Flood Relief Yard Sale/Fundraiser was held at the Santa Clara Elementary parking lot on Saturday, April 16th.  A check in the amount of $2,250 was donated to the flood relief fund by Doree Sargent, event chairwoman.  The remaining items were donatedto the Erin Kimball Memorial Foundation.

The Dixie State College automotive technology program recently received a significant gift courtesy of Stephen Wade Nissan in St. George, Utah, and Nissan North America. Wade donated three vehicles to the program’s fleet.  The vehicles will be used in lab settings at the college. Instructors will deliberately put “bugs” in the vehicles and require the students to go through the vehicles and diagnose the various problems. The vehicles will also be disassembled and then reassembled by students in order to learn about the various automotive parts.

“Stephen feels very committed to the community and college both. He enjoys that involvement,” said Stephen Wade Nissan General Sales Manger Tim Mills.

The donation is expected to give a shot in the arm to an already healthy program. The DSC automotive program has taken first at the AAA/Ford Student Auto Skills State Competition three of the past five years. At the national level, the program placed seventh overall in 2003 and sixth overall in 2002.

World Tai Chi and Qigong Day will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2005.  On this day, at 10:00 am beginning with the earliest time zone, people all over the world gather in parks, recreation centers, etc. to celebrate the healing powers of Tai Chi and Qigong. This is a great opportunity to get a taste of the many benefits that Tai Chi and Qigong offer individuals, society, and the world.  It began in 1999, and now this event takes place on six continents, in sixty countries, and in fifty U.S. States. It is officially recognized by the United Nations World Health Organization, and by Governors and Mayors across the country.

In St George it will be held at Vernon Worthen Park, 300 S 400 East at 10:00 am.

Free Tai Chi class taught by local instructors. No experience necessary. Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes (I choose bare feet!). You may want to bring a water bottle.
