Utah's jobless rate remains well below the national numbers, but it does appear that the state's economy is starting to ease, according to the latest estimates from the Utah Department of Workforce Services. Utah's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was estimated at 2.7 percent for January. Total employment in the state grew by 4.5 percent over the past 12 months, continuing the slight downward trend over the past six months. About 52,400 jobs were created during the past year. http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,660195318,00.html

Utah's housing boom officially came to an end late last year as residential permits took a nosedive. In December, permits issued for new houses, condominiums and apartments across the state fell to 1,551 units, a 21.1 percent drop from the number of permits issued during the same month in 2005, according to a report from the University of Utah's Bureau of Economic and Business Research. http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,660196047,00.html

Up, up and away. Utah home prices keep climbing. At 17.6 percent, Utah led the nation in house-price appreciation in last year's fourth quarter compared to the same quarter of 2005, according to a report released by the U.S. Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight. http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,660199797,00.html
